12 Things to Know in Sustainable Fashion This December

Every month, the Good On You editors scour the internet to bring you all the sustainable fashion and beauty news to know. Among the highlights this month are funding for a new leather alternative, and thousands of Euros raised for charity by “Great” brand ARMEDANGELS.

The Ultimate Adaptive Fashion Playbook (Vogue Business)

Vogue Business reports on a new open-source white paper created by accessibility and inclusion consultancy Tilting the Lens, which aims to help fashion brands better serve the disabled community and understand their needs in design. The consultancy’s chief executive officer Sinéad Burke told Vogue Business: “What we know from the research and the data is that disabled people have been underserved within the fashion market at every price point. There has been some really good progress in adaptive fashion at high street levels, in particular, but having one key piece is not good enough for disabled people—they need to get dressed everyday and go into the office.”

Dutch Qorium Lands €22m to Reinvent Real Leather With Cell-Based Tech (Tech Funding News)

Tech Funding News shares details of new investment for biotech startup Qorium to help it scale its lab-grown, cell-based leather alternative.

Nike, Superdry, and Lacoste Ads Banned Over Misleading Green Claims (BBC)

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned three adverts by Superdry, Nike, and Lacoste over their use of the word “sustainable” without backing the claim up properly, reports the BBC. The ASA requested evidence from each retailer but wasn’t satisfied that the claims were substantiated to a high enough level.

Amnesty International Urges Textile Giants to Safeguard Workers’ Rights (Fashion Network)

Amnesty International has called on fashion brands manufacturing in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan to step up and protect garment workers’ rights in their supply chains. Fashion Network details findings published across two of Amnesty International’s reports compiled after sending 21 companies manufacturing in the region a questionnaire about their human rights policies, monitoring, and actions around freedom of association. The organisation said: “there is little evidence to determine whether human rights policies are being implemented at factory level.”

Prosecutors Seek Six-Month Ad Ban For Italy’s Tod’s Over Alleged Labour Abuse (Reuters)

More news on Tod’s alleged labour exploitation: Reuters reports that prosecutors are investigating three of the fashion brand’s executives for alleged abuses, and are seeking to have the company temporarily banned from advertising. It comes as prosecutors also allege Tod’s knew about exploitation within subcontracted suppliers and ignored audits flagging the issues.

France Blocks Orders From Shein as It Expands Its Crackdown (The New York Times)

France is cracking down on SHEIN, reports The New York Times, after “childlike” sex dolls were discovered for sale on the e-commerce site. In early November, France’s prime minister moved to block access to SHEIN until it proved compliance with French laws, and later suspended delivery of every package the retailer had sent to the country over a period of 24 hours, prompting customs officers to inspect more than 200,000 packages that had arrived. Later in the month, the country moved to ban the platform for three months.

Labour Rights Groups File OECD Complaint Against Amazon Over Due Diligence in Pakistan Garment Supply Chain (Business & Human Rights Resource Centre)

Labour rights organisation Labour Behind the Label has filed a complaint to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) claiming it hasn’t conducted adequate due diligence on third-party marketplace sellers. The complaint was filed in cooperation with Pakistan-based NGOs Labour Education Foundation (LEF) and Pakistan Institute for Labour Education and Research (PILER) after investigations found a number of Amazon’s third-party suppliers were linked to labour exploitation.
