What makes a more sustainable tote bag?

Tote bags are great for carrying your shopping, packing everything for a beach day, holding your yoga mat, and so much more. And while totes are available to buy pretty much everywhere you look—in your favourite coffee shop, the supermarket, you name it—not all are created by businesses working more sustainably.

What makes a more ethical tote bag? To start with, lower-impact materials like recycled and organic fibres: totes are often made from cotton-canvas but it may not be organic, while polyester options, which are useful for carrying heavy stuff, are derived from fossil fuels that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and drive the demand for oil. We always recommend choosing recycled polyester if you do buy it. Animal-derived materials matter, too: high-end tote bags can often be made from leather, so we advise either finding a vegan alternative or seeking out certified leather options. Elsewhere, we suggest looking for indicators of longevity: quality manufacturing with good stitching and securely attached handles, seams, and fastenings, to ensure that the bag will stand up to frequent use and all the things you fill it with.

Here, then, are 15 options we think fit the bill.
