Finding more sustainable, tall fashion needn’t be a challenge
Mass-produced clothes are created using standardised, so-called “average” body measurements for whatever market they’re targeting. And even this sizing is inconsistent between brands: some will have standard garment pattern blocks with longer sleeve and hem lengths, while the same size in another store looks completely different.
But the reality is that everyone’s different. We’ve all got different proportions, curves, shapes, and heights (and that’s something to celebrate). So the odds of such standardised sizing fitting perfectly? They’re pretty slim actually. Even more so if you’re on the shorter or taller ends of the scale.
Add in the challenge of finding clothes that are lower impact, made by brands taking responsibility for their actions and acting more sustainably? It’s the kind of quandary our editors jump at. We’ve heard many reader requests on this topic, so we researched top-rated brands with dedicated categories for tall or long lengths (we love Reformation’s offering), and those whose trousers are available with different inseam options, like 34 and 36 inches—look to the likes of Nudie Jeans and MUD Jeans for instance. Other brands, like SeamsFriendly and Dressarte Paris, offer made-to-order clothes that require your measurements, and some, including OhSevenDays, are making trousers with extra fabric in the hems for lengthening. They span across ready-to-wear, occasion dressing, and sportswear.
We’ve also included a handful of brands rated “It’s a Start”, our middling score, because when it’s already challenging to find clothes to fit your needs, opting for brands that are making some progress is better than those doing nothing. You could check for these brands on secondhand platforms if you’d prefer not to buy them new.
Before we get to that, though, check out these shopping suggestions.
Shopping tips for tall people
There are a few things you can do to make your search for tall clothes easier, and first things first, you’ll need a tape measure. Read on for online and in-person shopping advice.
- Record the measurements of your favourite clothes that already fit well, keep them in your phone’s notes app, or somewhere easily accessible so you can compare them with items you’re shopping for online.
- Know that tailored trousers are often made with extra length folded into the hems to allow you to let them down if needed. If ordering online, check the product listing or contact the brand for this info, and when shopping in person, check the inside of the hem to see how much extra fabric is there (ideally 1 inch and above).
- Some tailored trousers simply come unhemmed so you can take them up to your exact height.
- If you find a brand, or even a particular garment that works well for your body shape, seek out more of the same on secondhand platforms like eBay and Vinted. Ask sellers for garment measurements ahead of buying so you can check the lengths.
