How physical retail can impact your engagement with sustainability issues
There’s no doubt that e-commerce helps you reach brilliant brands you might not otherwise be able to discover from wherever you are in the world, but as journalist Megan Doyle investigated for the Good On You Journal, physical retail stores can actually be a great way of helping shoppers take up and engage with circularity initiatives. Not only that, but they help you build deeper connections with brands you love, which all helps you to shop more mindfully and avoid the push to buy into fleeting trends.
Some brands, like Nudie Jeans, are using their brick-and-mortar stores to help reduce the carbon footprint of shipping from their e-commerce sites by offering click-and-collect from local spots.
Another way Doyle found brands using their physical retail outlets for good is by holding pop-ups, panel talks, and events at stores, aimed at helping locals connect with other like-minded shoppers and raise awareness of key sustainability issues such brands are addressing.
Are you feeling inspired to go visit more sustainable brands in your region? We hope so. Here, we’ve curated a geographical list of stores from brands rated “Good” or “Great” by Good On You, sorted by continent then country. We’ll keep adding to it as we get word about new brand boutiques, which are often also announced in our monthly news round-ups.
