Bye bye, binary fashion
In recent years, important gender-related issues from the rights of transgender people to feel safe and respected to athletic participation of trans and gender diverse people have highlighted the need for a shift in thinking. As traditional gender roles are evolving, and more and more people learn and accept that not everyone fits into the boxes of “man” and “woman”, so too are industries beginning to cater for the entire spectrum of beautiful gender-diverse humans. One challenge facing people who fall outside the gender binary is finding clothes that help them feel good in their skin.
Coupled with sourcing more sustainable brands that treat our fellow humans, animals, and the planet right, it can seem near impossible to overcome this hurdle. And while the world still has a lot of catching up to do, thankfully there is a selection of highly rated fashion brands creating more ethical and sustainable gender-inclusive, unisex clothing for every body. One such brand is Plant Faced Clothing, whose founder Charlie McEvoy says, “My focus has always been on creating clothing that helps people express their values, particularly around compassion, sustainability, and animal rights. From the beginning, I wanted our clothing to be accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of gender.” McEvoy identifies as non-binary/gender neutral and says this naturally influenced their approach to design and creating a community around shared values. Similarly, Linda Simonetti, marketing director at maison blanche, says that “the idea that clothing needs to be gendered felt like an unnecessary limitation from the start. maison blanche was always about garments that fit the person wearing them, not a category they’re supposed to belong to.”
Gender neutral clothing and sustainability are closely connected because both encourage a more thoughtful approach to consumption. When garments are designed to be worn by anyone, they often have a broader appeal and a longer lifespan.

Simonetti echoes the sentiment, noting that “Designing genderless means we can calculate production quantities more accurately, since pieces work for everyone instead of being split into separate lines. That means less overstock, less warehouse space, and built-in flexibility: if a piece doesn’t fit the person who ordered it, it might fit their partner. Either way, you get double the reach from a single design.”

Both say they’ve seen a changing attitude from shoppers over the years, noting that people are increasingly prioritising fit, personal style, and longevity over whether a garment fits into a binary gender category or trend.
