Change Merchants – Use the Power of Your Purchase for Good!

Change Merchants GoY-Ratings_4 are an Australian ethical retailer bringing you beautiful and sustainable fashion, homewares and accessories from all over the world.

Shopping with a positive impact

As a longtime non-profit worker, the Director of Change Merchants, Catherine Francetich realised that the real solution to poverty is economic empowerment and fairness.

“I wanted to create a sustainable business that would make ethical choices easier for Australians to purchase, and thereby create more sustainable markets for poorer and marginalised producers,” explained Catherine.

We love that Change Merchants are transparent about who they source from, enabling shoppers to know the story behind the certified organic or fair trade products they’re buying. When selecting ethical business partners, they seek out suppliers that adhere to the 10 principles of fair trade as well as those that work to minimise their environmental impact.
10 Principles of Fair Trade

As a member of the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand, Change Merchants seek to empower communities to take control of their own futures and economic rights, and particularly those of women.

According to Catherine, “This happens through respecting people’s economic and human rights, and paying fair prices for their labour and the products they make.”

My top 3 finds on Change Merchants

Kaveri Long Punjammies by Sudara

Here in Australia, we’re slowly but surely heading into warmer weather, so I’ve got my eyes on these gorgeous flowy pants (with pockets!) crafted by female artisans in India. Sudara works with women who’ve escaped the sex-trafficking industry, providing them with support and sustainable living-wage employment. I’m loving this black and ivory floral print but there’s a wide range of colours and patterns to choose from! For the men, I think these stylin’ Kumar Punjammies are a great option.

Brahmaputra Purse by Conserve India

Brahmaputra Purse by Conserve IndiaThis eye-catching purse with its vivid splash of colours is made from upcycled plastic bags collected on the streets of Delhi by the team from Conserve India. This amazing organisation employs and trains hundreds of people from Delhi’s most disadvantaged communities to clear their streets of the plague of plastic bag waste. The result is a cleaner environment and a range of stunning accessories.
